Ohanami Bento

Ohanami Bento

Ohanami means flower-viewing. Bento is lunchbox.
This is what I brought to a nearby park today to eat under the cherry trees there.

Mame-gohan (rice with green peas) onigiri

Stuffed Shiitake mushroom

Tamagoyaki

Roasted Prawn with eggyolk and cornmeal

This is something close to what my mom loves to make for occasions like New Year’s day. But the ones I made today tasted just so-so...nothing great. I should have brought soy sauce or lemon slice for them.

My bento and cherry blossoms…

When I was taking this pic, some people were watching me like “What the hell is she doing?”
;P

And some more cherry blossom pics here...

Your bento looks so delicious--oishiyo! I've been suffering from Japanese-food deprivation; at least I get to see the food at your site, if not actually eat it!

I love your quote about the people watching you take pictures of your bento! I can picture this happening--whisper, whisper, why is that lady taking a picture of her lunch? whisper, whisper...

The cherry blossoms are lovely.

ohhh very pretty cherry blossom! A friend sent me photos of cherry blossom in Japan a long time ago and I am so in love with the pink colour! How lucky you are. ;-) Your ohanami bento looks so yummy. Awww, I want to have a picnic too.

> Amanda --- To tell you the truth, I lied on my stomach to take that picture… Well, I’m going to stay away from the park for a while ;P

> pinkcocoa --- I know you love picnic. Food tastes better outdoors, don’t you think? : )

> Lemon --- Welcome to my site! I’m glad that you liked my picture, especially the last one :D

> MrsT --- You just have to come here someday and share our cherry blossom craze : )

> Jonny --- Thanks. I feel so rewarded.

Hi obachan,

The cherry blossoms are so beautiful, aren't they? It's been a while since I've been in Japan to see the cherry blossoms. I miss it a lot.

Your obento looks so yummy as well. I've never had onigiri with green peas in it before, but it sounds delicious. I must try it sometime. Most often, I'll have onigiri (or musubi) with umeboshi.

What a wonderful picnic lunch Obachan.. so inspiring..as opposed to my o-so-blah sandwich and water bottle at the park.

Gorgeous! I went to so many fun hanami parties while in Kagoshima...this is making me sad.

Looks delicious.

> Dagmar --- Thanks for visiting :D I’m going to add some more Hanami pics to my another blog, so please enjoy the spring in Japan!

> Reid --- I wish you would be able to do hanami in Japan again. Onigiri with umeboshi is a classic, isn’t it? I love it, too. Do try the green peas onigiri, too. I like it when the proper amount of saltiness brings out the subtle sweetness of green peas. But some people (including my sister) don’t like tasting the subtle sweetness with rice.

> keona --- Thank you. Oh come on, you’re being too modest about your lunch. Anyway, everything tastes good outdoors, doesn’t it?

> Sarah --- Oh Sarah, hope you don’t get too home-sick (Kagoshima-sick?). It must have been so nice there.

> fish fish --- Thanks! :D Hmmm… I might hear from some bento sellers soon???

Hi obachan, the cherry blossoms are so pretty. Are they edible?

I think they were whispering about you lying on your stomach in the park. Can imagine that this would not be considered in the height of decorum.

Hi umami,
Yeah, they are edible. Here’s sakura (cherry blossom) jelly , and on top of this sakura anpan (bread with sweet red-bean-paste filling, 2nd from left) is a salt-preserved sakura. Cute, isn’t it?

Hi Obachan, I so wish I was there... (not just for the delicious looking obento!) I just realised that I haven't had Japanese rice for ages (my husband doesn't like sticky rice), it's sad, I know...

Hi keiko,
I wish we had a "dokodemo door" so that you could visit my kitchen and eat loads of Japanese sticky rice when your husband is taking a shower or something! :)

obasan;
Obento looks so delicious...The cherry blossom, too.
I lived in Japan for 2 years and was able to enjoy both. I miss the food, the sites and the people.
This site is great for me. It gives me a little of Japan in photos...
thanks
